Terms Updated

The terms of service for L1fe.co.za sites have been ammended with some small changes.  The most important change is the addition of the following points to your responsibilities if you operate a site on L1fe.co.za:

  • the Content exists for its own sake; in particular, the Content is not designed to source traffic for other sites;
  • the Content is not duplicated within your site, or across any of your sites;
  • you do not operate more than one site for any given topic;

Violations of these terms are damaging to all users because it depreciates the level of services that can be provided, increases administrative burden, and decreases the overall value of the entire L1fe.co.za domain, including its subdomains.  Violations of the terms of service are periodically identified and addressed.

Please note that it remains your responsibility to review the published terms of service.  You can find the full detail at Terms of Service.

UPDATE on 4 April 2012:
Following the change in terms of service (which occurred on 19 February 2012) there has been an unprecedented increase in service abuse on this community site.  Much of the abuse involve persons creating large numbers of sites that serve only to link to their company site or product offering.  The primary reason for such activity is an attempt to fool search engines that the company site (hosted elsewhere) is an important search target.  In other words, they want to juice the books with Google and similar search engines.

The L1fe.co.za portal is not offered by corporate giants.  Rather run at private cost by volunteers, and made available as a community service.  Consequently, the impact of the flagrant and unethical activity recently observed is quite large.  The intentional abuse has made it necessary that (at least for now) further site registrations are disabled.

We Survived: Bot Attack!

At 7:51pm the L1fe.co.za servers were hit with an automated bot attack.  The attack lasted 20 minutes, and as far as these things go it was relatively mild.  The bot managed to create a little over 220 fake sites and fake users during its 20 minute romp.  There may have been some minor service disruption (similar to what happens during a denial-of-service attack) but everything is back to normal.
